Please Like, Favorite & Subscribe! Come follow me @Barnacules on Twitter -or- on Facebook (http://facebook.barnnerd.com) *UPDATE* I've used the chair for 2 days now and still like it but I find the reclining function a little annoying because you can't stop it at a certain point, it's all or nothing. I also found that the chair prevents me from slouching or sitting a bad posture which I both like and dislike very much because I'm starting to realize how much I depended on that crappy posture to be truly comfortable. It was time for a new chair in the Nerd Cave so I stopped by Costco Wholesale and noticed this Bayside Furnishings Metro Mesh Chair Model # CORC-6 computer chair for $100 USD. It's a full mesh chair similar to a Herman Miller Aeron Chair for a fraction of the price. It's not as configurable as a Aeron but it's very sturdy even with my 280lb ass on it and it's very quite and move smooth (and reclines smooth). The chair has a maximum weight of 300lb but I can tell that is a very low estimate since I can bounce up and down on it and it's very sturdy. The chair was very easy to assemble but if you watch the video closely you will see I assemble it wrong the first time and have to reassemble it again (typical Barnacules move). I also put a funny sound bite in the video also, comment if you hear it! (Thanks VegasJaime for the sound bite!). So far I am loving the chair and I'm sitting in it right now while I do this write up on the video while it uploads! The thing I like the most about this chair is the support it gives you on the sides when you sit back into it and the lumbar support. This is going to solve my back pain issues and also being able to move the arm rests back while still having the chair keep you upright is a huge plus! The chair has a basic control to move up and down and lock the reclining function and that is it, no tilt adjustment or back adjustment. You can change the tension to make reclining easier or harder but that is about it. And the great thing about Costco is if I find out I don't like the chair after using it for a few weeks, months or even years I can just take it back and get a full refund (god I love Costco!). Chair Manufacturer (Purchased form Costco Wholesale in Woodinville, WA) http://www.baysidefurnishings.com Metro Mesh Chair Model # CORC-6 As a software developer I spend a lot of time sitting so having a good chair is the difference between being miserable and being content and happy. Professor Frank Wolak, of Stanford University, presents "Using Economics to Increase the Intelligence of the Smart Grid" on February 25, 2013 as part of the 2012-2013 Highlight Seminar Series. ABSTRACT Over the past 20 years, electricity supply industries throughout the world have transitioned from the vertically-integrated monopoly regime to a wholesale market regime. This transition has dramatically altered the economic incentives faced by firms at all stages of the production process as well as electricity consumers. This talk will first characterize how the incentives created by electricity re-structuring have altered the behavior of firms and consumers at all stages of the production process, often in ways that ultimately increase the costs of supplying wholesale electricity and the retail prices that consumers face. It will then summarize research on several aspects of the re-structured regime designed to improve overall industry performance. Topics discussed include: (1) dynamic pricing programs and protocols for providing information about a customer's electricity consumption to reduce monthly electricity bills and reduce the level and volatility of wholesale prices, (2) a procedure for valuing transmission expansions that accounts for new sources of benefits of transmission expansions in a wholesale market regime, (3) forward market financial instruments that provide strong incentives for suppliers to offer to sell wholesale electricity at the lowest possible price, and (4) the design of short-term market pricing mechanisms that account for all relevant network operating constraints and thereby reduce the total cost of supplying energy to all locations in the transmission network. The talk will also highlight the significant regulatory barriers to implementing many policies (supported by the research discussed) that would increase the likelihood that consumers realize significant benefits from electricity industry re-structuring. BIOGRAPHY Frank A. Wolak is the Holbrook Working Professor of Commodity Price Studies in the Department of Economics at Stanford University. His fields of specialization are Industrial Organization and Econometric Theory. His recent work studies methods for introducing competition into infrastructure industries — telecommunications, electricity, water delivery and postal delivery services — and on assessing the impacts of these competition policies on consumer and producer welfare. From January 1, 1998 to March 31, 2011, Wolak was the Chair of the Market Surveillance Committee of the California Independent System Operator for electricity supply industry in California. He is a visiting scholar at University of California Energy Institute and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He currently directs the Program on Energy and Sustainable Development (PESD) in the Freeman-Spogli Institute (FSI) for International Studies.
